month.

What began as an idea quickly became something more tangible: a peer community, a developing resource hub, advocacy work, new relationships, and the foundations of an organisation we hope can become genuinely useful to people who are detransitioning, desisting, reconsidering, or changing direction in their gender journey.

Our focus is simple: peer support, practical resources and advocacy.

We are detransitioner-led, non-partisan, evidence-informed and person-led. We do not have an outcome in mind for the people who come to us. We want people to have space to ask questions, find useful information, connect with others where appropriate, and make decisions about their own lives and healthcare.

Building the community

Our private peer-support community opened in September and began welcoming its first members.

We have been putting the basics in place carefully, including community guidelines, moderation processes and a simple vetting system designed to help keep the space safe and useful.

Alongside this, we have been developing a consistent approach to language across Detrans Hub. We aim to describe people’s experiences accurately without assuming identities, motivations or outcomes.

A principle we keep returning to is simple:

Describe the change before assigning the identity.

Sometimes someone identifies strongly as a detransitioner. Sometimes they are reconsidering treatment, pausing, changing healthcare goals or simply trying to work out what comes next. Our language needs to leave room for all of that.

Building practical resources

Much of September was spent building the Detrans Hub website and its first collection of resources. These include information about peer support, preparing for healthcare appointments, healthcare rights, crisis support, advocacy and practical state-based resources.

We are also developing a professional directory to help people locate relevant healthcare and support services where possible.

The website launched October 1st, but it will never really be “finished”. We expect it to grow as people tell us what is missing, confusing or difficult to find. The website is live at detranshub.org

Beginning our advocacy work

September also marked the beginning of Detrans Hub’s policy and advocacy work.

We completed our first submission to the MRFF Reducing Health Inequities Mission consultation and began work on further healthcare consultations taking place in October. A recurring issue in our advocacy is what happens when someone’s healthcare goals change. People should not disappear from research, services or follow-up simply because their circumstances, identity or treatment goals change. Healthcare systems need pathways that can respond to people as they are now, including those who stop, pause, reverse or reconsider gender-related treatment. We also want research to accurately reflect uncertainty. Uncertain outcomes should remain uncertain rather than being assumed to represent either positive or negative outcomes.

Building relationships

We have also started connecting with professionals, advocates and organisations in Australia and internationally. These early conversations are helping us understand what already exists, where gaps remain and where collaboration may be useful.

A small team is also beginning to form around Detrans Hub, bringing experience in advocacy, research, organisational development and lived experience. There is a lot we still have to learn.

In October, Detrans Hub will also attend a conference in Adelaide as part of our early outreach and relationship-building work. Attending Doesn’t imply agreement with every speaker, organisation or viewpoint represented. Our role is to listen, build useful connections and represent the needs of detransitioners.

Listening without turning people into data points

One of the systems we are developing will help us notice patterns in de-identified enquiries. The aim is not to build a database of personal stories.

It is to notice things like:

What are people repeatedly asking for?

Where are they struggling to find help?

Which resources are missing?

Are particular services difficult to access?

What should we build next?

Early enquiries won’t tell us how common an experience is across a wider population. But they can tell us where someone standing in front of us needs help. That distinction matters.

What comes next

October is where Detrans Hub begins moving from building the foundations to seeing how those foundations work in practice.

Our immediate priorities include launching the website, continuing to grow the peer community, developing the professional directory, completing upcoming healthcare submissions, attending the Adelaide conference, and building stronger connections with professionals and organisations.

Most importantly, we will be listening.

Some things we have built will work well. Some will almost certainly need changing. That is part of creating something new. Our aim is not to build the biggest organisation or the most complicated system. It is to build something useful, responsible and responsive to the people it exists to serve.

Be kind. Be curious.

Thanks for reading!
